Jaroslaw Jossypowytsch Hryzak ( Ukrainian Ярослав Йосипович Грицак ;. Scientific transliteration Jaroslav Josypovyč Hrycak * 1. January 1960 in Dovhe , Rajon Stryj ) is a Ukrainian historian and publicist, professor at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv , director of the Institute for Historical Research at of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv , visiting professor at the Central European University in Budapest from 1996 to 2009 , member of the scientific committee "Collegium Artium" in Krakow , editor of the journal Україна модерна ( Ukraina Moderna ), member of the editorial board of the journal "Ab Imperio" , first Vice-President of the Scientific Advisory Board of Harvard Ukrainian Studies, member and spokesman of the German-Ukrainian Historians Commission (DUHK).

Life

In his childhood, Hrytsak was very much supported in his education by his father, a tailor, belonged to the first generation of students in his village and studied history from 1977 to 1982 at the Ivan Franko University of Lviv, where he received his doctorate in 1987. In 1996 he completed his habilitation at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kiev . Study visits abroad followed:

Hrytsak became known for his "Outline of the History of Ukraine" first published in 1996 - essentially his habilitation thesis - and the extensive monograph on Ivan Franko that appeared ten years later . Both works have been translated into Polish. At the same time, he began to publish numerous scientific articles, including in the journal "Ukraina moderna", which he edited and which initially appeared for many years in the Kiev publishing house Krytyka. In recent years, Hrytsak has increasingly written articles on popular science in magazines such as "Kraina", which he summarized in concise themed volumes in order to reach a wider audience.
