In 1999 , in his third Formula 3000 season, Watt moved to the first Super Nova Racing team, which had won the driver and team title in the last two years. Watt, who started as one of the favorites in the championship, had to give up his title ambitions early on, as no driver could keep up with the dominant Nick Heidfeld . Therefore, Watt concentrated on the fight for the runner-up, which he won with race victories in the last two races at Spa-Francorchamps and at the Nürburgring . The second place overall was overshadowed by the death of Gonzalo Rodríguez , who had a fatal accident on a racing weekend of the American CART series before the last race of the season, up to which he had finished second .

Less than a month after winning the runner-up European title, Watt had a serious accident in a motorcycle accident that occurred while taking photos for a Danish magazine. Watt has been paraplegic since the accident .
