Jasvinder Sanghera

Jasvinder Sanghera , CBE (born September 1965 in Derby ) is an English non-fiction author and activist of Indian descent. She supports the victims of forced marriage and honor crimes.

Life

Jasvinder Sanghera was born and raised in Derby. She escaped a forced marriage herself and then founded Karma Nirvana , a charity that cares for men and women who are affected by forced marriage and honor crimes.

Her memoir "Shame" was a Times Top 10 best seller. It is recognized how Jasvinder brings the issue of forced marriage to the public. Prime Minister David Cameron said that her work has turned his attention to the issue of forced marriage. In 2008 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Derby.

She won The Pride of Britain Award in 2009 and was named Cosmopolitan Ultimate Woman of the Year in 2010. She was featured in the Guardian's list of Top 100 Most Inspirational Women in 2011. She was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2013 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the victims of forced marriage and honor crimes . In 2014 she was named Legal Campaigner of the Year. Jasvinder also received an entry in the book Who is Who in 2016 .

Other activities

Jasvinder is a juror at an international art competition in London, the Passion For Freedom London Festival in the Mall Galleries , which was hosted by the Mall Galleries in September 2015.
