Jaume Duch Guillot (born February 1962 in Barcelona , Spain ) is the speaker of the European Parliament . He has held this position since July 2006, initially on a temporary basis, and since July 2008 permanently. Since February 2017, he has also been Director General for Communication and as the highest administrative officer below the Secretary General, he is responsible for all of Parliament's information and communication offers (Internet, press department, campaigns, visitor service, Parlamentarium, etc.).

As spokesman for the European Parliament, Duch Guillot answers questions from the accredited media representatives in Brussels on the work and positions of Parliament and on institutional issues. His tasks include regular press briefings before the plenary sessions as well as supporting the parliamentary speaker at press conferences.

Before his appointment as Director-General, Duch Guillot was also Director of the Media Directorate within the Directorate-General for Communication of the Parliament's Administration, which includes the press service, the online communication unit, the audiovisual service and the “ EuroparlTV ” WebTV service .

Biographical information

From 1999 to 2006, Duch Guillot was head of the press department (1999–2006) of the European Parliament and worked as an advisor on the staff of the then President of Parliament José-Maria Gil-Robles (1997–1999).

He began his career as an EU civil servant in Parliament in 1990. Before that, he had worked for three years as an assistant to a MEP (1987–1989). He was also a lecturer in international law and European law at the University of Barcelona (1986–1990), where he also obtained his law degree.

Duch Guillot speaks Spanish, Catalan , French, English and Italian. He is married with three children and lives in Brussels . He is (co-) author of several publications dealing with communication and the EU.
