The Java Sea is a long, shallow sea in Southeast Asia , part of the Australasian Mediterranean Sea on the edge of the Pacific Ocean .

geography

The Java Sea has an average depth of 40–50 meters (greatest depth in the east up to 200 m) and covers an area of 367,000 to 433,000 km² , depending on the specific delimitation.

It is surrounded by the Indonesian islands of Borneo in the north, Java in the south, Sumatra in the west and Sulawesi in the east. In the southwest, a strait, the Sunda Strait , connects the Java Sea with the Indian Ocean . In the northwest the Karimata Strait leads into the South China Sea , in the northeast is the Makassar Strait to the Celebes Sea . To the east is the Floressee and to the south the Bali Sea .

Several islands and archipelagos lie in the area, such as the Bawean , the Karimunjawa Islands or Kepulauan Seribu .

The Java Sea was formed at the end of the last ice age when the sea level rose and the Sundaland was flooded.

Climate and ecology

In this tropical sea, the ocean currents are determined by the change in monsoon winds. In summer the western monsoon pushes the water from the South China Sea, through the Karimata Strait, into the Java Sea, the eastern monsoon brings the water back out of the Flores Sea.

There are over three thousand different species of fish and fishing is an important source of income. The area is popular because of its marine life with corals and sponges .

Pollution and driftnets pose a major problem for the flora and fauna. In addition, global warming and excessively high water temperatures threaten the reefs and their biodiversity. Coral bleaching turns many reefs into rubble deserts. This endangers tourism as well as fishing.

history

On August 26, 1883, the Krakatau volcano erupted in the Sunda Strait and triggered a global catastrophe.

During the Second World War, a Japanese fleet defeated a British-Dutch-Australian-American fleet in the Battle of the Java Sea in February 1942 .
