Javier Recio Gracia

Javier Recio Gracia (born July 1981 in Madrid, Spain ) is a Spanish animator and director . He was nominated for an Oscar in 2010 for directing the short film La dama y la muerte (2009) .

Life

Javier Recio Gracia grew up in Madrid, Spain and later in Granada . His interest in drawing began in his youth. At the age of 16 he and a few friends published their own independent comic series called Proyecto. After school, he studied art at Complutense Madrid University and started working in 2005 at Kandor Graphics , an animation studio founded by Antonio Banderas , Manuel Sicilia and Raúl García . In 2006 he received a permanent contract there. In 2008 his first film, Smart Like a Lynx , was released, in which he worked both as a draftsman and as a storyboard animator. In 2009 he was allowed to make his first own film, the short film La dama y muerte , which in 2010 received the Goya for “Best Short Film”. However, at the 2010 Academy Awards, Logorama won .

Recio Gracia then went to the United States, where he found employment with DreamWorks in Los Angeles , California . His first work for the studio was the film The Guardians of Light (2012).
