Jazzite
The Jazzit ("Jazz in the Theater") is a Salzburg jazz club (in the basement of the Volksheim of the Communist Party of Austria ). The Jazzit program often leaves the framework of a typical jazz club and offers space for experimental things from the field of electronic music.
The club opened in February 2002. In the first five years, more than 80,000 visitors were registered. The Tuesday sessions - with free admission - have become a fixed point for many visitors and musicians. The result was a series of CDs of its own, and the Jazzbase youth club has developed into an interesting partner.
Every first Sunday of the month at 8 p.m. on Radiofabrik 107.5 (live stream: www.radiofabrik.at) the Jazzit radio is broadcast : an hour with current audio samples, musical finds, favorite numbers and studio guests by Eva Altenbuchner and Harald Gaukel is designed and moderated.
In January 2006 Jazzit received the Salzburg State Culture Prize. Four years of Jazzit could be celebrated on February 10, 2006 - on April 7, 2006, 25 years of jazz in the theater. Between the two key dates, friendly cultural sites and former hosts were invited to hold events at Jazzit. On November 15, 2006, the Ö1 / WDR 5 Jazz Night was broadcast in an eight-hour live broadcast from Jazzit .
prehistory
On April 7, 1981, the first concert of "Jazz im Theater" took place on the Elisabeth stage, at that time still at Plainstrasse 42. The program featured the Doug Hammond Trio with Doug Hammond on drums, Muneer A. Fataah on cello and Steve Coleman, who was hardly known at the time, on saxophone. Jazz greats like Lester Bowie , David Murray , Henry Threadgill , Cecil Taylor , Steve Coleman, Marc Ribot and Louis Sclavis performed in the basement of the Elisabethbühne over the next few years. The performances by Dino Saluzzi , Ernst Jandl , Werner Pirchner and Moondog are also legendary . In 1990 the series of events was taken over by Jazz im Theater - ars nova .
In 1996 the Elisabethbühne moved to the renovated Petersbrunnhof. On May 12, 1996 the last concert took place on the old Elisabeth stage: Accordion Festival Project 96 Guy Klucevsek (USA) / Otto Lechner (Austria) / Bratko Bilic (Slovenia) / Maria Kalaniemi (Finland) / Lars Hollmer (Sweden). In 1997 the search for an own event space began. The long-term sponsor - the private brewery Josef Sigl in Obertrum - financed the renovation in advance. Funds from the city and state of Salzburg and the federal government were made available for the technical equipment. In November 2001, renovation work began in the Volksheim. A separately leased bar was built next to the hall and is open every day (except Monday).
