Place name
The oldest written mention as Gezemisz comes from the year 1276. Because of the m in the oldest documents, Eichler and Walther assume that the place name, unlike Jeßnitz bei Bautzen, is not derived from the Sorbian jaseń ("ash"), but rather from * jězva or * jazva (Polish jaźwa see. "roof cave", Lower Sorbian for "cave Brockhouse" jazw , "Badger"), with the unknown in the German sound sequence zv as -sm- or -sem- was acquired. The Old Sorbian form Jězvinica could then either refer to actual roof caves or to the location in the valley basin in the headwaters of the Jahnabach .
