Jean-Auguste Brutails
Jean-Auguste Brutails (born December 20, 1859 in Viviez , † January 1, 1926 in Bordeaux ) was a French historian , archivist and paleographer who published numerous books and articles. Brutails left behind thousands of photos with images of churches and church furnishings from south-west France.
Life
He studied at the École nationale des chartes from 1880 and received his diploma there in 1882. After archive studies in Pamplona Brutails yet earned a degree ( license ) in law.
In 1884 he got a job in the archive of the Pyrénées-Orientales department , in 1889 he moved to the Gironde department , where he worked until his retirement.
In addition to his work as archivist, he gave courses at the University of Bordeaux, Brutails was appointed in 1888 by the President of the French Republic for life as a judge at the highest court of Andorra .
In 1908, Brutails co-founded the magazine Revue historique de Bordeaux et du département de la Gironde . In 1910 he was appointed Conservateur des antiquités et objets d'art du département de la Gironde .
In 1912, his dissertation entitled Étude archéologique sur les églises de la Gironde was accepted by the University of Bordeaux.
On October 18, 1897, he married Jeanne-Marie-Thérèse Aka († 1920), the daughter of a trader in Bordeaux. From this marriage, the daughter Marguerite-Elizabeth (born September 7, 1898, † May 14, 1920) was born.

- 1893: Awarded the Ordre des Palmes Académiques
- 1902: Corresponding member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres
- 1903: Appointed Knight of the Legion of Honor
- 1913: The Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres awarded him the Prix Gobert for his book Les vieilles églises de la Gironde
- 1919: Appointed member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres
