Jean-Baptiste Duroselle
Jean-Baptiste Duroselle (born November 17, 1917 in Paris , † September 12, 1994 in Arradon ) was a French historian .
Life
Duroselle studied at the École normal supérieure in Paris and received his agrégation in history and geography in 1943. From 1945 until the completion of his thèse d'État in history in 1949 he was an assistant in the department of modern and contemporary history at the Sorbonne . From 1950 to 1957 he taught history at Saarland University in Saarbrücken and from 1957 to 1958 at Lille University . Between 1958 and 1964 he headed a political science research institute for international relations at the Fondation nationale des sciences politiques . In 1964 he was elected professor of modern history at the Sorbonne. In 1983 he retired. From 1985 to 1986 he was rotating president of the Institut de France .
He was president of a commission dealing with the publication of documents on the history of French diplomacy. Duroselle's main focus was to shed light on the causes of the Second World War . He was also president of the Institut d'histoire des relations internationales contemporaines founded by Pierre Renouvin at the Sorbonne. In 1988 he published a biography about Georges Clemenceau . In 1990 his book Europa was published by several European publishers and in a total of eight languages . A history of his peoples , in which he described the history of the continent from a pan-European perspective.
In 1975 he was elected a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques and the American Philosophical Society . In 1992 he became a corresponding member of the British Academy . In 1982 he received the Balzan Prize in Social Sciences . He was an officer in the Legion of Honor and commander of the Ordre national du Mérite . The Institut d'histoire des relations internationales contemporaines named a prize after him. A hall at the Sorbonne is also named after him.
Since 1940 he was married to Christiane Viant, with whom he had three sons and a daughter.
