Jean-Baptiste Philibert Willaumez
Jean-Baptiste Philibert Willaumez (born August 7, 1761 in Le Palais on the island of Belle-Île , † May 17, 1845 in Suresnes ) was a French admiral.
Life
At the age of fourteen Willaumez came to the Navy and on the ship "Bien-Aimé", which Louis Antoine de Bougainville led.
Under the command of Admiral François Joseph Paul de Grasse , Willaumez fought in the American War of Independence . He distinguished himself in the Battle of Les Saintes (April 12, 1782), but a few weeks later he was wounded and taken prisoner by the British during a sea battle off Cape Henry (northeast of Virginia Beach ). After the Peace of Paris (September 3, 1783), Willaumez spent several years traveling for French trading houses between North and South America and France.
In 1791, Willaumez joined Captain Joseph Bruny d'Entrecasteaux on behalf of the National Assembly in search of the missing geographer Jean-François de La Pérouse . After Entrecasteaux died in late July 1793 off the Hermit Islands ( Papua New Guinea ), Willaumez broke off this expedition and returned to France.
Together with Louis Thomas Villaret de Joyeuse , he brought General Charles Victoire Emmanuel Leclerc and his invading army to Saint-Domingue ( Hispaniola ) in 1802 , where they were supposed to put down the uprising led by Toussaint Louverture .
In 1819 Willaumez resigned all his offices and retired into private life; on the occasion of his official farewell, he was promoted to Vice-Admiral. During the July monarchy he was one of the advisors to Ferdinand Philippe d'Orléans, duc de Chartres . On January 13, 1840, he married Jeanne-Honorine Frémin, widow of Jacques-Charles Chevalier. Jean-Baptiste Philibert Willaumez died at the age of 81 on May 17, 1845 in Suresnes and found his final resting place there.
