Jean-Claude Rude (born September 28, 1954 in Reutlingen , Germany , † March 26, 1980 in Velars-sur-Ouche ) was a French cyclist.

Jean-Claude Rude was born in Germany in 1954 as the son of a French occupation soldier. From 1973 he was a member of the Union Cycliste Dijonnaise cycling club and became a local hero in Dijon . As a cyclist, he was mainly active on the track . In 1974 he finished fourth in the French championship in the amateurs ' standing race , in 1978 fifth, and in 1979 he finished third. In 1975 and 1976 he was Burgundian champion in the individual time trial and in 1975 in the 1000 meter time trial .

Rudes' particular ambition was to set speed records , in particular to improve José Meiffret's record of 204.788 kilometers per hour from 1962. In August 1978 he made an attempt on the Volkswagen test track in Ehra-Lessien , where he was in the slipstream of a Martini - used Porsches with 800 hp , driven by racing driver Henri Pescarolo . When he reached 175 km / h, the inner tube of his bike burst. For a second attempt, stronger tires were used, but the record run failed again.

On December 6, 1979, he attempted to break the German Karl-Heinz Kramer's record of 154 km / h over 100 meters, but fell at the speed of 153 km / h and only missed the record by a thousandth of a second. In the same year, however, he set a new speed record of 145 kilometers per hour for tandems on a tandem made by Schauff . Together with the blind, one-legged driver Etienne Chapaz, he reached this speed on a motorway in Alsace in the slipstream of a motorcycle.

On March 26, 1980, 25-year-old Jean-Claude Rude was training for a record run alongside an express train. He was carried away by the turbulence of the train and fatally injured. At the site of the accident, near the Viaduc de Fain in Velars-sur-Ouche, his family had a memorial stone erected for him. From 2012, was on the cycling track of the home track of Rude, year of Dijon, the Sprint Trophy de Bourgogne "Souvenir Jean-Claude Rude" held in his honor.
