Jean-Jacques Becker (born May 14, 1928 in Paris ) is a French historian.

Life

In July 1942, Becker and his parents moved from Paris ( occupied by Wehrmacht troops since June 1940 ) to Grenoble. He completed his studies at the University of Clermont-Ferrand , the University of Paris-Nanterre and the Institut d'études politiques de Paris .

In 1976, Becker published his dissertation on public opinion in France about the start of the war in 1914 ( L'Opinion publique française et les débuts de la guerre de 1914 ). His research focus was on the First World War and political history, especially the French left .

His daughter Annette Becker is also a historian with similar interests. His sister Annie Kriegel (1926-1995), a member of the Resistance , also a historian and journalist, was an active member of the Parti communiste français and turned away from it in 1956 in the course of the de-Stalinization.

Becker's reassessment of the social background of the First World War, which he undertook together with Stéphane Audoin-Rouzeau and Annette Becker, among others , led to great attention and controversy under the heading of Consentement patriotique (patriotic consensus).
