The court place

The nature reserve is enclosed by the places Alzenau, Wasserlos , Hörstein , Großwelzheim and Kahl am Main . It is divided into three areas, all of which are located in the Alzenauer Unterwald east of the Vorspessart lakes . The court is located in the south of the forest on Hörsteiner See , to the right of the federal motorway 45 , where the Schützbergbach seeps away. In the northwest is the Neufeld on the edge of the forest to Prischoss . The Alte Weide , the Haide and the Lange Tanne make up the third sub-area in the north. The Degen-Weg runs along the edge of the Alzenauer Sande .

history

Emergence

The sandy area around Alzenau was created by masses of drifting sand that blew away from the banks of the Main at the end of the Ice Age . Around 1820 there were two drifting sand covers totaling 2500 hectares north and south of the Kahl . The deforestation of the up to 10 m high drifting sand dunes had serious consequences for Alzenau. One report said that the whole area was darkened by streams of sand. The planting of birch and pine trees in 1856 finally set the sands.

Expulsion

The nature reserve, designated in March 1993, is the largest in the Aschaffenburg district with 95.5 hectares . In 2000, 746 different animal and plant species were found in the Alzenau sands . 186 of these species are in a hazard category on Germany's Red List . The Alzenauer Sands are also an FFH area (Fauna-Flora-Habitat) and thus part of the Europe-wide Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

Hurricane damage

The thick pine forest in the nature reserve was destroyed by hurricane gusts
The Haide (with the city of Alzenau in the background)

On August 18, 2019, an eastward moving super cell formed over the Saarland , which reached its peak in the Rhine-Main area. The severe gale force gusts that resulted destroyed large parts of the Alzenau Unterwald forest in the nature reserve, in which there is now almost no tree. The hailstones several centimeters in size and the extremely heavy rain also caused enormous damage. The destroyed areas are to be reforested.

fauna

In the sandy soil of the nature reserve, the digger wasps represent the most species-rich family of wasps. They are adapted to the sandy grassland habitat and build their nests in sun-exposed sandy soils. The larvae of ant maids , the so-called ant lions, also build trap funnels in the sandy soil, into which their prey falls. There they are gripped by the larva’s powerful forceps.

Geotopes

Two dunes have been designated as geotopes by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment .

The dune in Kühbruch is identified as 671R001. They are a flat and irregularly shaped narrow stretch of dunes. It was created by wind erosion in the late and post glacial with little vegetation .

The dune in the Sauweide is identified as 671R002. It is sparsely overgrown and has a wavy surface.
