Jean-Jacques Burnel (born February 21, 1952 in London ) is a British-French musician. He became known as the bass player and singer in the band The Stranglers .

Burnel, who had learned classical guitar, was a founding member of the Stranglers, where he took on the role of bassist. In 1979 he released a solo album, Euroman Cometh , which fused basic punk structures with electronic sounds and reached number 40 on the UK album charts. In 1981 he produced an album by the French new wave band Taxi Girl and between 1981 and 1983 three albums by the Belgian band Polyphonic Size, to which he partly also contributed bass tracks and background vocals. Another solo album was Fire & Water , which was released in 1983 and played the soundtrack to the film Ecoutez Vos Murs by French filmmaker Vincent Coudanne. The album reached number 94 on the UK album charts. In 1984 Burnel was briefly a member of the Japanese rock band ARB parallel to his work with the Stranglers and recorded an album with them. In 1984 and 1986 he played the bass tracks for two albums by Norwegian musician Espen Beranek Holm . In 1986 Burnel founded the R&B supergroup The Purple Helmets, together with Dave Greenfield of the Stranglers, John Ellis of the Vibrators , Manny Elias of Tears for Fears and the later Propellerheads founder Alex Gifford , which released two albums with R&B covers by 1989. In 2004 he composed the theme music for the anime series Gankutsuō .

Private

Burnel was born in Notting Hill, London, to French parents. His father was a cook and restaurant owner, his mother worked in the business. When Jean-Jacques was twelve years old, the family moved to Godalming, southwest of London; he attended school in nearby Guildford , where the Stranglers would later be founded. He studied economic history and worked as a French teacher after graduating and before joining the Stranglers. Burnel holds the 7th Dan in the martial arts karate and is allowed to call himself "Grandmaster". He is Chairman and Head Coach of the British Martial Arts Association Shidokan GB.
