Jean-Nicolas-Elisabeth Berchtold (born December 4, 1789 in Freiburg im Üechtland ; † September 27, 1860 ibid) was a Swiss politician and State Chancellor of the Canton of Friborg .

Life

Catholic , from Freiburg , his parents were Joseph-Antoine Berchtold, schoolmaster, and Marie-Catherine geb. Dupond. The Berchtold family belonged to the ordinary citizenship of the city, which was kept out of power by the privileged citizenship, which formed an oligarchy from 1627–1798 and 1814–1830 . His first marriage was Angélique de Beaupré, whom he had met in Poland , and his second marriage was Rose-Marie Dupont, daughter of Joseph-Nicolas-Emmanuel Dupont, hat maker and councilor of the city of Freiburg .

After visiting the St. Michael College , Berchtold traveled through Europe as a student and private tutor and stayed in Germany , Italy , Russia and the future Poland. At the University of Landshut (Bavaria) he received his doctorate in medicine in 1819 and in the same year received a patent as a doctor and surgeon from the Freiburg State Council. In 1835 he finally returned to Freiburg and taught grammar and history at the middle school for a while. From 1836 to 1847 he worked as a doctor at the Freiburg Citizens' Hospital. At the same time he worked as a clerk for the Education Council (1838) and then for the Health Council (1844).

Berchtold was a hard-line anti-clerical radical who was close to Julien Schaller . In 1846 and 1847–1855 he sat on the Grand Council. Although he did not take part directly in the radical coup of January 1847, he was arrested but managed to escape after six months in prison. After the radicals came to power, Berchtold held various offices: Member of the Grand Council (1847–1855), State Chancellor (1847–1852) and Council of States (1853/54). He was the first chancellor to exercise this office under the directorate system. In 1856, a few months before the fall of the regime, he distanced himself from the radicals.

Berchtold belonged to the liberal "Cercle littéraire et de commerce de Friborg" and from 1848 to 1860 was a member of the school lords' chamber of the city of Freiburg. An avid historian, he was one of the three founding members of the Société d'histoire du canton de Friborg in 1840 and published several studies in the Archives de la Société d'histoire. He wrote a partial Histoire du canton de Friborg in three volumes, for which he took a lot of material from the handwritten notes of Canon Fontaine. He was also a contributor to numerous newspapers, including L'Emulation and Le Confédéré .
