from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jean Boulet (born November 16, 1920 in Brunoy , † February 14, 2011 in Aix-en-Provence ) was a French test pilot .

Life

Boulet graduated from the École polytechnique in 1940 and the Supaéro from 1942 to 1944 . He then entered the service of the French Air Force . In 1947 he became a test pilot at SNCASE . The head of flight tests there, Jacques Lecarme, encouraged him to also take training on helicopters. He completed the training for this in the USA and received his license on February 23, 1948. During the flight tests of a Sud-Est SE 535 Mistral on January 23, 1953, his machine went into a tailspin and had to free himself with the ejector seat and was thus the first French to use an ejector seat.

On June 6, 1955 he reached the world record with an SE 3130 "Alouette II" with a height of 8,209 m. He then reached the record height of 10,984 meters with a modified Alouette II (SE.3150) on June 13, 1958. He completed the first flight of the Aérospatiale SA 321 on June 10, 1959. Four years later, on July 23, 1963, he and Roland Coiffignon achieved the world speed record of 350.5 km / h on this helicopter. On June 21, 1972, Jean Boulet reached an altitude of 12,442 m with an Aérospatiale SA-315 and thus set an absolute height record for helicopters, which was only broken on March 23, 2002 by Fred North with a Eurocopter AS 350 at 12,954 m . However, this attempt has not been recognized by the FAI until today (2012) , so that Boulet's record is still kept as current in their database .

Jean Boulet retired in 1975 and died on February 14, 2011 at the age of 90 in Aix-en-Provence.
