Jean D. Wilson

Jean Donald Wilson (born 1932 in Wellington , Collingsworth County , Texas ) is an American endocrinologist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center .

He is best known for his work on the effects (and importance for gender differentiation ) of androgens (male sex hormones, especially testosterone and dihydrotestosterone ) and anti-Müllerian hormone . Wilson and co-workers identified numerous disorders of testosterone metabolism and testosterone receptors .

Wilson first studied chemistry and zoology at the University of Texas at Austin (graduated in 1951) and graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center with an MD in 1955 . As a student he was already interested in endocrinology and worked for Donald W. Seldin (1920–2018). As a postdoctoral fellow , Wilson worked at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas and with Sidney Udenfriend at the National Heart Institute (part of the National Institutes of Health ). Since 1960, Wilson was on the faculty of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center , initially under Marvin D. Siperstein . Here he mainly worked on the entire metabolism of cholesterol and the effects of steroid hormones and was head of the department for endocrinology and metabolism from 1988 to 1995. He is (as of 2020) the Charles Cameron Sprague Distinguished Chair in Biomedical Science and Professor of Internal Medicine .

Jean D. Wilson was President of the Endocrine Society , the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the Association of American Physicians . For many years he was one of the authors and editors of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine , arguably the most renowned textbook on internal medicine in the Anglo-American-speaking world, and of Williams' Textbook of Endocrinology . Wilson was the editor of the Journal of Clinical Investigation and the Year Book of Medicine . According to the Scopus database, it has an h-index of 76 (as of June 2020).
