Jean Hatzfeld (born 1949 in the French colony of Madagascar ) is a French journalist.

Life

Jean Hatzfeld is a grandson of the Graecist Jean Hatzfeld and son of the historian Olivier Hatzfeld and Maud Hatzfeld, Protestants of Jewish origin. He grew up in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon . In 1976 he became a journalist for the newspaper Liberation , where he initially built up the sports department. He switched to politics and reported for twenty years as a war correspondent on conflicts in the Middle East, the Balkans and Africa. Various non-fiction books and some novels emerged from the experiences and newspaper articles.

Hatzfeld suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds while reporting in Bosnia in 1992 . In June 1994 he left Sarajevo to report on the soccer World Cup in the USA . He then drove to Rwanda , where the Hutu murders between May and July found many victims among the Tutsi . He stayed in the country for two months. In 1998 he took a one-year leave of absence from the Liberation, went back to Rwanda and interviewed surviving Tutsi, which resulted in the report Dans le nu de la vie , which appeared in 2000. When most of the perpetrators were given amnesty in 2003, he conducted interviews with them and published them and his analysis in the book Stratégie des antilopes .

Hatzfeld's texts were edited for theater performances and brought to the stage at the Festival d'Avignon, among others .
