Jean Hennessy
Jean Patrick Hennessy (born April 26, 1874 in Cherves-Richemont , Charente department , † November 4, 1944 in Lausanne ) was a French diplomat and politician.
Life
Jean Hennessy was a member of the Hennessy family with an Irish immigrant background who make cognac . He devoted himself to the study of history until he and his brother James (* 1867) inherited the company of his father Maurice Hennessy (1834-1905). In their time, the family was counted among the financially strongest in France. Part of Jean Hennessy's legacy is property 31, rue de Bassano in the 7th arrondissement of Paris .
Like his grandfather Jacques Hennessy and his great-uncle, Jean Hennessy was elected to the French National Assembly. He was a member of it from 1910 to 1932.
In 1924 he was a candidate for the Cartel des gauches , a coalition that brought the majority of candidates in the National Assembly in this election. Also in 1924 he received the Agrément as ambassador in Bern . He was re-elected to parliament in 1928 but was defeated in the 1932 election. From 1928 to 1930 he was Minister of Agriculture in the governments of Raymond Poincaré , Aristide Briand and André Tardieu .
Jean Hennessy founded the Parti social-national in 1933 , with which he was elected to the National Assembly in 1936 for the constituency of the Alpes-Maritimes department . There he belonged to the defeated group of 57 MPs and 23 Senators who voted on July 10, 1940 against a constitutional amendment that granted Philippe Pétain dictatorial powers.
