Life

Jean Michel was the son of a nobleman of the same name from Piedmont . He studied canon law and was provost in Vercelli , in 1444 pastor in Moudon and canon in Lausanne , in 1446 also canon in Geneva . He became dean of the cathedral in Sion in 1461 and chancellor of the Duke of Savoy in 1465 . In 1466 he became Bishop of Mondovì . After the death of Guillaume de Varax , the cathedral chapter elected the apostolic protonotary and younger brother of the Duke of Savoy, Francis of Savoy, as bishop on April 8, 1466 . This choice was also supported by Bern . However, Pope Paul II refused to confirm the election. Since the cathedral chapter failed to choose an alternative candidate, Paul II appointed Jean de Michel Bishop of Lausanne on November 18, 1466. The cathedral chapter did not accept the appointment until 1467. Jean Michel first entered his diocese in November 1468. On the return journey from Bern, where he had sought support against the Duke of Savoy, he died on December 28, 1468 in the castle of Lucens .
