Jean Porter

Jean Porter (born December 8, 1922 in Cisco , Texas - † January 13, 2018 in Canoga Park , California ) was an American actress who has appeared in more than forty films and television series during her career. She played her best-known roles in the western The Left Hand of God , in the film noir Cry Danger and as the leading actress in the short film Roller Derby Girl . Porter's active time as an actress lasted from 1936 to 1961.

Life

Jean Porter was born in Cisco, Texas in 1922. At the age of twelve she began taking dance lessons at Fanchon and Marco dancing school, where she was discovered by a talent agent. She had her first small film appearance in 1936 in Song and Dance Man . In the years that followed, Porter also played some of the larger roles named in the credits alongside well-known film stars. She had her most active time in the 1940s with more than thirty film appearances, including mostly comedies and westerns. She also played the lead role in the 1949 short film Roller Derby Girl , which was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Short Film in 1950 .

In the 1950s, Porter had her best-known roles in the film noir Cry Danger and in the western The Left Hand of God . She then played mainly as a guest star in television series such as 77 Sunset Strip before she ended her film career in 1961. In 2008, Porter was interviewed in the documentary Dalton Trumbo: From A-List to Blacklist . In 2010 she published a biography of jazz musician Jess Stacy entitled Chicago Jazz and Then Some: As Told by One of the Original Chicagoans, Jess Stacy .

Porter was married to film director Edward Dmytryk , whom she met while filming Till the End of Time , from 1948 until his death in 1999 . The couple had three children. Jean Porter died in California in January 2018 at the age of 95. She was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Hollywood Hills .
