Jean Sommeng Vorachak

Jean Sommeng Vorachak (born February 24, 1933 in Ban Sian Vangtha near Thakhek , Laos ; † July 14, 2009 in Bangkok , Thailand ) was Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church and Vicar Apostolic of Savannakhet .

Life

Jean Sommeng Vorachak, one of nine children of a Catholic farmer, studied at the seminary in Laos and France. After his ordination on June 29, 1963, he completed further studies in Rome. In 1965 he became a pastor in the Lao province of Khammuan , one of the two pastoral regions of the Savannakhet Vicariate. In 1973 he became rector of the Small Seminary in Thakhek . In 1975 he was appointed Pro-Vicar of the Savannakhet Vicariate.

Jean Sommeng was named Titular Bishop of Muzuca in Proconsulari by John Paul II in 1997 and was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Savannakhet . The Vicar Apostolic of Paksé , Thomas Khamphan , donated him episcopal ordination on October 19 of the same year; Co-consecrators were Pierre-Antonio-Jean Bach MEP , Apostolic Vicar Emeritus of Savannakhet, and Jean Khamsé Vithavong OMI , Apostolic Vicar of Vientiane .

He died in office on July 14, 2009 at the age of 76 from complications from cancer.
