Jean V was the son of Jeans IV from the Bueil family and his wife Margarete Dauphine von Auvergne , heiress of the County of Sancerre.

In 1428 he was made captain of Tours , later captain general of the king in Anjou and Maine . Together with Joan of Arc he achieved the surrender of Orléans . He accompanied King Charles VII to Reims for his coronation , took part in several important campaigns - for example in the battle of St. Jakob an der Birs in 1444 - and was appointed Grand Admiral of France in 1450. In 1453 he took part in the Battle of Castillon .

Jean V was also counselor and chamberlain to King Louis XI. After he was deposed by this in 1461, he joined the Ligue du Bien public in 1465 , but was able to win back the favor of the king in 1469.

In his first marriage he married Jeanne de Montéjean, in his second marriage in 1456 Martine Turpin. His son Antoine de Bueil married Jeanne de Valois, daughter of King Charles VII and his mistress Agnès Sorel .

Jean V is the author of Le Jouvencel , an account of the siege of Orléans written in 1466 to educate the young. The comments with which his squire Jean Tringant added to this report in 1483 make it possible to identify the persons named by the admiral.
