Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer Group Live is a live album by Jeff Beck released in 1977 on Epic Records.

background

Jeff Beck in Amsterdam 1979

The album was recorded as part of Jeff Beck's tour promoting Wired . Beck was supported by the Fusion group around synthesizer player Jan Hammer . The exact dates and locations of the live recordings are not known. The tour began in June 1976 and ended in February 1977. 117 concerts were performed during the tour.

The A & R man Tom Werman suggested that the appearance at the Astor Theater in Reading , PA (August 31, 1976) gave the best shots. Beck mixed these recordings with others at the Allen Toussaint Studio in New Orleans .

Finally, Jan Hammer decided to mix the album himself with the support of Dennis Weinreich at Scorpio Sound Studios in London, England.

The stereo spectrum of this album corresponded to the stage set-up with the guitar positioned center-right, the keyboards center-left, violin right, and drums and bass in the center.

reception

William Ruhlmann wrote on Allmusic:

“This straightforward live souvenir combines songs from Blow by Blow and Wired , plus a few other things, and while it features typically fiery playing from Beck, the backup is a bit too heavy-handed and the occasional vocals (by Hammer and drummer Tony Smith ) are embarrassing. "

“This no-nonsense live souvenir brings together songs from Blow by Blow and Wired and a few other things, and while it usually features fiery playing from Beck, the backup is a bit clumsy and the occasional vocal interludes (from Hammer and drummer Tony Smith) are embarrassing. "
