Jeffrey L. Bewkes (born May 25, 1952 in Paterson , New Jersey ) is an American manager . He was President of Time Warner from 2005 to 2018 and Chief Executive Officer from 2008 to 2018 .

life and career

Bewkes grew up in Connecticut and New Jersey . He graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in 1974 and received a master's of business administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1977 . After completing his studies, he worked as an account officer for Citibank in New York before moving to the pay TV channel Home Box Office (HBO) in 1979 . At HBO, he was first responsible for marketing the station Take Two , a station that aroused little interest from the audience. The following year he became sales director of the broadcaster Cinemax which was very successful. In 1983, the company management promoted him to Vice President for Corporate and Financial Planning. The following year he joined Time Inc. to coordinate parent company activities with HBO. After his year at Time, he returned to HBO as vice president of finance. Jeffrey Bewkes became President and Chief Operating Officer of HBO in September 1991 and rose to CEO in May 1995. At the time of his appointment as CEO, the market in this area was stagnating and Bewkes managed to make the company one of the most profitable in the industry. In 2002 he became chairman of the Entertainment and Networks division. In January 2006, he became President and Chief Operating Officer of Time Warners. In July of the same year he became a member of the Board of Trustees of Yale University. January 2007 he was elected to the supervisory board. In January 2008 he succeeded Richard D. Parsons as CEO of the company.
