Jeffrey Maurice Sterling, Baron Sterling of Plaistow GCVO Kt CBE (born December 27, 1934 ) is a British economic manager , entrepreneur and politician of the Conservative Party , who has been a life peer member of the House of Lords since 1991 .

Life

Managers, entrepreneurs and volunteer work

After attending school, Sterling worked for the stockbroker Paul Schweder & Co between 1955 and 1957 and then at G Eberstadt & Co until 1962 , before he was Finance Director of General Guarantee Corp from 1962 to 1964 . Having director from 1964 to 1969 Managing Gula Investments Ltd was, he was in 1969 CEO and founder of the company Sterling Guarantee Trust plc , which in 1985 with the P & O merged.

During this time he also began his commitment to World ORT , a Jewish non-governmental organization promoting school and professional training, and has been a member of its executive since 1966. After chairing its organizing committee between 1969 and 1973, he has been chairman of technical services since 1974 and vice-president of World ORT in Great Britain since 1978.

In 1977 he was one of the co-founders of Mobility , an organization promoting mobility for people with disabilities , and has been chairman of its executive committee ever since. After serving as Vice Chairman from 1977 to 1994, he has been Chairman of Mobility since 1994 . For his services he was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1977 . At the same time he was involved in organizations promoting art and culture and was, among other things, chairman of the Young Vic Co theater from 1975 to 1983 and chairman of the board of directors of the Royal Ballet School from 1983 to 1999 and also a member of the board of directors of the Royal Ballet from 1986 to 1999 . In 1985 he was knighted as a Knight Bachelor .

Sterling was also a board member of British Airways between 1979 and 1982 and a director between 1980 and 2005 and also chairman of the board of directors of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company from 1983 to 2005. During this time he was also Special Advisor to the Ministers for Trade and Industry between 1982 and 1990 and subsequently from 1990 to 1991 President of the General Council of British Shipping, the lobby group for the shipping industry.

House of Lords

Sterling was promoted to Life Peer Baron Sterling of Plaistow , of Pall Mall in the City of Westminster, by a letters patent dated January 17, 1991 . Shortly after its introduction was carried out ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords .

honors and awards

Lord Sterling, an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration from Nottingham Trent University in 1995 and an Honorary Doctor of Civil Law from the University of Durham in 1996 , is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (1993) and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (1997).

He was also awarded the Knight of the Order of Saint John in 1998 , Grand Officer of the Order of Mayo Argentina in 2002 and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 2004.
