Jean Perréal

Jean Perréal (* approx. 1460 in Lyon , † 1530 in Melun ; also Johannes Parisiensus or Jean De Paris ) was a French Renaissance artist, painter and architect .

Jean Perréal was probably the best paid and one of the most valued artists of his time.
Even Leonardo da Vinci noted that he asked Perréal about his art of colored chalk drawing. Jean Perréal and Leonardo da Vinci later became acquainted with each other. Perréal was also acquainted with Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim and the later famous doctor Symphorien Champier .

Perréal was mentioned almost year after year between 1485 and 1529. He stayed either in his hometown of Lyon or accompanied as court painter under the three kings Charles VIII , Louis XII. and Franz I. the French royal family on their travels. The fame he had at the time was largely based on his artistic organization of festivities for high-ranking personalities through Lyon. Such festivals turned out to be particularly magnificent, and their buildings (triumphal arches made of paper mache , street decorations, festival stagings, etc.) achieved much longer lasting fame. Perréal is said to have been famous for having illustrated complicated abstract political and other ideological content through allegories , as can also be seen from some of the handwriting miniatures ascribed to him.

Jean Perréal directed the organization of the entries of Charles II of Bourbon and the Cardinal of Lyon in 1485, of France's King Charles VIII in 1490 and of Queen Anne de Bretagne in 1494, and of King Louis XII. in 1499 and by Cardinal Franz von Rohan in 1506. He also organized the extraordinarily splendid festival in 1515 of King Francis I and Duke Francesco Maria I della Rovere in 1518. Also the funerals of Anne de Bretagne in 1514 and of King Ludwig XII. 1515 were headed by Perréal.

In 1514 he was commissioned to travel to London to prepare the furnishings for the future Queen Mary of England , the wife of Louis XII. In 1494 Perréal was also a technical appraiser for the city of Lyon, since 1509 he had the title of " controleur ", in that year he also inspected the scaffolding of the collapsed pillars of the bridge over the Rhone in Lyon.
