Jelena Wladimirowna Pitjewa ( Russian Елена Владимировна Питьева ; * around 1950 ) is a Soviet - Russian astronomer .

Life

Pitjewa studied at the Mathematics - Mechanics - Faculty of by Andrei Zhdanov named Leningrad University (LGU). She completed her studies in 1972 in astronomy . She then worked as an engineer in the astrophysical Bjurakan observatory of the LGU.

In 1974, Piteva became a research assistant at the Institute for Theoretical Astronomy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)). In 1988 the Institute for Theoretical Astronomy was merged into the new Institute for Applied Astronomy of the AN-SSSR, in which Pitjewa now worked. In 1994 she defended her dissertation on the specification of the ephemeris of the large planets and the determination of some astronomical constants by means of radar observations , with which she was awarded her doctorate as a candidate for physical and mathematical sciences in the field of astrometry and celestial mechanics . In 2005 she defended her dissertation on the creation of high-precision ephemeris of the large planets and determination of astronomical constants, with which she was awarded a doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences in the field of astrometry and celestial mechanics. Her teachers were Georgi Albertowitsch Krassinski and Viktor Alexandrowitsch Brumberg . She then became the head of the laboratory for ephemeris astronomy.

Pitjewa's research focus remained the ephemeris, the determination of the masses of planets and asteroids , the planetary rotation and topography, the solar corona and observations on general relativity . Their results contributed to a better understanding of the effects of the asteroids and Trans-Neptunian objects on planetary motion.

Together with the astronomers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory E. Myles Standish struck Pitjeva the IAU Working Group on Numerical standards for Fundamental Astronomy (NSFA) the values for the masses of the three largest asteroids, the moon - Earth mass ratio and the astronomical unit in meters in front which were then adopted by the 27th General Assembly of the IAU. She is a member of the IAU and works in the Organizing Committees of Commission 4 Ephemerides and Commission 52 Relativity in Fundamental Astronomy as well as in the IAU NSFA Working Group.
