Jepkorir Rose Chepyator-Thomson
Jepkorir Rose Chepyator-Thomson (* 1954 in Kenya) is a former Kenyan middle and long distance runner . She is currently a professor in the Department of Exercise Science at the University of Georgia .
Career
She grew up as the oldest of eleven siblings in a Kalenjin family in Kapkonga in the Rift Valley Province . She walked five kilometers to and from school twice a day. In 1974 she married the American teacher Norman Frederic Thomson. Although she soon became a mother, she continued her running career.
In 1978 she won bronze in the 1500 m at the Pan-African Games in Algiers. At the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton she was eliminated over 1500 m in the preliminary run and was eighth over 3000 m .
The following year she was East and Central Africa champion over 3000 m. At the 1979 African Athletics Championships , she won silver in the 1500 m and 3000 m.
In the same year she moved with her husband and their two children to the United States , where they began studying at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . The boycott of Kenya prevented participation in the Moscow Olympic Games .
In 1990 she did her doctorate on Stratification in an American secondary school: Issues of race, class, gender, and physical ability in physical education. She then taught sports science and was a trainer at the State University of New York at Brockport until she moved to the University of Georgia in 1996.
She had three sons with her husband Norm Thomson, also a professor at the University of Georgia, who died in 2013.
