Jerry Lloyd Bona (born February 5, 1945 in Little Rock , Arkansas ) is an American mathematician who deals with nonlinear partial differential equations especially in hydrodynamics .

Bona received his bachelor's degree in applied mathematics and computer science from Washington University in 1966 and received his PhD from Harvard University in 1971 with Garrett Birkhoff (Cauchy Problems with Random Initial Values ​​in the Space of Tempered Distributions) . From 1970 to 1972 he was Research Fellow at the University of Essex with Brooke Benjamin and 1972/73 Dickson Instructor at the University of Chicago , where he became Assistant Professor in 1973, Associate Professor in 1976 and Professor in 1979.
