Jerry Portnoy (born November 25, 1943 in Evanston , Illinois ) is an American blues musician, a virtuoso on the harmonica .

Life

Jerry Portnoy was born in Evanston, but grew up in the blues-laden neighborhood of Chicago's Maxwell Street . He began his career as a professional musician in the late 1960s. In the 1970s Portnoy played in Muddy Waters' band . In 1980 he formed the Legendary Blues Band with Calvin "Fuzz" Jones (bass), Pinetop Perkins (piano) and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (drums), all from Muddy Waters' band .

In 1986 Portnoy temporarily withdrew from the music business. In 1987 he founded with Ronnie Earl the Broadcasters . From 1989 he had his own band, the Streamliners . From 1991 to 1993 Portnoy played in Eric Clapton's blues band. Occasionally, in addition to his own performances, Jerry Portnoy is on the road with the "Muddy Waters Tribute Band".
