The Jervis Bay Territory - surrounded by New South Wales and the Pacific - consists of large parts of the Bherwerre Peninsula , which forms the southern end of Jervis Bay, and Bowen Island at the entrance to the bay. In the southwest the area extends to the St Georges Basin lagoon and the Sussex Inlet Channel . A narrow strip of land on the Beecroft Peninsula north of the entrance to Jervis Bay around the Point Perpendicular Lighthouse is also part of the territory.

The two villages of Jervis Bay Village and Wreck Bay Village are the main settlements in the Jervis Bay Territory. Larger towns in the area are the seaside resorts of Huskisson , Vincentia and Sussex Inlet and the town of Nowra, which is around 40 kilometers away .

history

The area was bought from the state of New South Wales in 1915 by the federal government so that the new capital Canberra , which was being built at the time, could have its own access to the sea. Until 1989 the Jervis Bay Territory was the exclave of the Australian Capital Territory , which is about 160 kilometers to the west. Then it was granted self-government rights by the federal government and it was split off from the ACT.

The territory was the planned location of the only nuclear power plant in Australia, the Jervis Bay nuclear power plant , for which foundation work had already been carried out in the 1970s, but which was not subsequently built.

marine

The Royal Australian Navy , the largest employer in the territory, operates a port, training facilities and Jervis Bay Territory Airport in the Jervis Bay Territory , which is also used for civilian purposes.
