Jerzy Starak (born February 1, 1945 ) is a Polish entrepreneur. According to an annually updated list of the rich in the Polish edition of Forbes magazine , he was one of the ten richest Poles in 2013 with assets of around 725 million euros. Because of his investments in the Polish pharmaceutical industry, he is also known as the "King of the pharmaceutical market".

Beginnings

After completing his studies at the Warsaw University of Natural Sciences (SGGW), Starak entered the Polish pharmaceutical industry. In 1971 he did an internship at a Nestlé manufacturing facility in England. He then worked in Bologna, Italy, for a manufacturer of pharmaceutical production and packaging machines. He later went into business for himself in Italy. At the end of the 1970s he returned to Poland and shortly before the declaration of war he founded his first company, Comindex ( company rolno-spożywcza Comindex ), which sells the juice and sauce brand "Billy", confectionery under the brand "Picollo" and the perfume " Currara ”. The Comindex was one of the largest private companies in Poland before turning ; the advertising slogan “Sosy Billy w każdej chwili” (in German, for example: Billy's sauces are always suitable ) was widely known. Products have been successfully exported to Cuba and Mongolia.

After the turn

At the beginning of the 1990s Starak was a partner in the introduction of large western FMCG brands into the Polish market. He was involved in the establishment of companies and brands such as Nutricia , Colgate-Palmolive , Sanofi and Bols .

In 2000, the entrepreneur acquired Polpharma SA , which formed the basis on which Starak was able to build an important Polish pharmaceutical group. The group, now known as Grupa Polpharma , is controlled by Spectra Holding , which is owned by Starak. In addition to the Polpharma part of his portfolio Polish companies Herbapol Lublin SA , Herbapol Pruszkow and Polfa Warszawa SA Polpharma is also the majority owner of Medana Pharma Terpol Group SA In addition Starak holds a minority stake in the majority of the Bunge Group belonging ZT "Kruszwica" SA , and a Majority stake in the margarine and edible oil manufacturer Zakłady Przemysłu Tłuszczowego Warszawa SA

Starak is also expanding its group's holdings abroad. He wants to win markets, especially in Central and Eastern Europe. In September 2011 Polpharma acquired the largest pharmaceutical company in Kazakhstan , Chimpharm (now: Santo AO ). The Russian Federation, Ukraine and Turkey are also defined as strategic markets. The Russian Akrihin and the Spanish Farmaprojects SAU already belong to the Polpharma Group

The attempt to establish a Polish fast food chain failed. Starak also exited the biofuels market after the government announced that it would reduce subsidies.

Others

Starak is one of the founding members of the Polska Rada Biznesu . The employers' association Polska Konfederacja Pracodawców Prywatnych Lewiatan honored him with the "Nagroda Lewiatana" award for his achievements in business and for his voluntary work, especially in the cultural sector. Together with his wife Anna Wóżniak-Starak, he also runs the luxury restaurant "Belvedere", which was set up in a former orangery in Warsaw's Łazienki Park . His hobby is sailing.
