Jesús Poll (born January 6, 1965 in Aragua ) is a former Venezuelan boxer .

Career

amateur

In 1981 Poll won the silver medal in the light flyweight (-48 kg) at the South American Championships in Bogotá at the age of 16 . The following year he took part in the flyweight (-51 kg) world championships in Munich . Surprisingly, he reached the semifinals, which he lost to eventual world champion Yuri Alexandrow with 5-0 judges' votes and thus won the bronze medal. That same year Poll won the South American Games in Rosario and the following year he was South American champion in Guayaquil . Also in 1983, Poll started at the Pan American Games and won the bronze medal. In 1984 Venezuela boycotted the Olympic Games in Havana and so Poll could only take part in the alternate friendship competitions, in which he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Klaus-Dieter Kirchstein , GDR (5-0) in the bantamweight division .

professional

In 1985 Poll turned pro. He fought his first fights in Venezuela from 1987 but then moved to the USA. There he won the California State Featherweight Championship in his 15th fight . In his 19th fight in 1988 he defeated the later WBA and WBO world champion Louie Espinoza and won the title of the NABF . After defending his title in the same year, Poll got the chance to win the WBA world title in 1989. In his fight against Juan José Estrada, however, he went KO in the 10th round. This was Poll's first defeat. Over the next four years, Poll's career continued to decline. He became the opponent of many talents and also some later world champions, such as Jesse James Leija , Jesus Salud , Kevin Kelley and Eddie Hopson . In 1993, Poll hung up his boxing gloves.
