Yuri Wassiljewitsch Alexandrow ( Russian Юрий Васильевич Александров ; born October 13, 1963 in Kamensk-Uralsky ; † January 1, 2013 in Moscow ) was a Russian - Soviet boxer .

Career

Alexandrov was five-time Soviet champion, in 1982 in flyweight (-51 kg) and in 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1987 in bantamweight (-54 kg).

At the 1982 World Championships in Munich , Alexandrow won after victories a. a. over Ljubiša Simić , Yugoslavia (5-0), the gold medal. The following year he won the European Championship after beating Sami Buzoli , Yugoslavia (5-0) in the final . Due to the Olympic boycott of the Soviet Union in 1984, Alexandrov could not participate in the Olympic Games. In the alternate friendship competitions, he won the silver medal. In the final he lost against the Cuban Ramon Ledon with 3-2 judge votes.

At the 1986 World Championships in Reno , Alexandrow reached the semi-finals after victories over Simić (4: 1) and Akeem Anifowoshe , Nigeria (5: 0), which he lost to René Breitbarth , GDR (5: 0). In 1987 Alexandrov won the silver medal at the European Championships in Turin . In the final he was defeated by the Bulgarian Aleksandar Christow (5-0).

In 1989, Alexandrov became the first Soviet boxer to go professional. However, he only played five fights and was not very successful. In 1992 he ended his career.

After boxing

In 2001 Alexandrov became vice-president of the Russian Professional Boxing Association. He held this post until his death on January 1, 2013. Alexandrov was buried in the Troyekurovo cemetery.
