Jessica Burgner-Kahrs (born January 7, 1981 in Wuppertal ) is a German computer scientist . Since the end of 2015 she has been head of the Chair for Continuum Robotics she founded at Leibniz University in Hanover .
Career
After graduating from the Nikolaus-Ehlen-Gymnasium in Velbert in 2000, she studied computer science at the University of Karlsruhe , which she graduated with a diploma in 2006. As a research assistant at the Institute for Process Computing , Automation and Robotics , she developed the world's first robot system for the automated, laser-assisted cutting of bones as part of her dissertation . In January 2010, she was in professional engineering with the work Robot assisted laser osteotomy for Dr. Ing. PhD.
For the next two years, she was a Research Associate at the Medical Engineering and Discovery Lab in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Vanderbilt University in Nashville , United States . She returned to Germany in 2012 through a DAAD funding program to recruit German scientists from abroad and has since worked in various positions at Leibniz University Hannover .
In spring 2013, Burgner-Kahrs became managing director of the Mechatronik-Zentrum Hannover (MZH), an interdisciplinary research center of the faculties for electrical engineering , computer science and mechanical engineering . In October 2013, she founded the Emmy Noether junior research group CROSS at the Mechatronics Center, which deals with continuum robots for surgical systems. Under continuum robot tiny, non-hinged "robots" are with tentacle-like understanding arms of several super-elastic tubes that allow minimally invasive surgical procedures can be improved in medicine. Burgner-Kahrs and the Emmy-Noether group conduct basic research in this area.
In November 2015, Burgner-Kahrs accepted a call from her university for a W2 professorship and founded the chair for continuum robotics there, emerging from the Emmy Noether group. In August 2018 it was announced that Burgner-Kahrs had accepted a position at the University of Toronto in Canada.
