Jesus Vargas

Jesus Miranda Vargas (born March 22, 1905 in Manila , † March 25, 1994 ibid) was a Philippine lieutenant general and politician .

biography

After attending school, Vargas entered the service of the Philippine Constabulary and graduated from the Philippine Constabulary Academy in 1929 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). In 1940 he was a graduate of the US Army Field Artillery School in Fort Sill and then took part in World War II and was last aide-de-camp and commanding officer of President Manuel Quezon's Guard Battalion in 1943 .

After the end of the war, vargas graduated from Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth in 1947 and was an administrative officer with the ground forces between 1947 and 1948 on his return. After a subsequent employment as superintendent of the Reserve Officer Training Corps in Manila, he was commanding the task force of the 5th Battalion during the engagements with the Hukbalahap between 1949 and 1950 .

Then he was initially Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces before he rose to Lieutenant General and was last from December 30, 1953 to December 29, 1956 Commanding General of the Armed Forces of the Philippines ( Sandatahang Lakas ng Pilipinas ). As such, he was SEATO's military advisor between 1954 and 1956 .

He was then between August 28, 1957 and May 18, 1959 Minister of Defense ( Secretary of National Defense ) in the government of President Carlos P. Garcia . At the same time he was chairman of the supervisory board of the National Authority for Waterworks and Drainage.

He then moved into the private sector and was among other things President of the Philippine American Management & Financing Company from 1961 to 1965 and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation from 1962 to 1965 .

His last position was from July 1, 1965 to September 5, 1972, Secretary General of SEATO.

Jesus Vargas has received several awards and received including the Order of Military Merit (Taiguk) of the Republic of Korea and the White Order of the Elephant of Thailand . In 1962 he became a Cavalier of the Alumni Association of the Philippine Military Academy .
