Sunthorn Hongladarom

Sunthorn Hongladarom ( Thai : นาย สุนทร หงส์ ลดา รม ภ์ , born August 23, 1912 in Nakhon Sawan ; † September 16, 2005 ) was a Thai diplomat and politician .

biography

After attending Thai schools, he continued his education in 1930 at Weymouth College and then in 1931 at Brighton College before he studied at the University of Cambridge , where he first received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1936 . He then completed postgraduate studies at Cambridge University in 1939 with a Master of Arts (MA).

After his return to Thailand he was employed in the Ministry of Education in 1939 and then between 1943 and 1946 head of the Foreign Department in the Information Office. After working in the Prime Minister's office, he was first Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Ministers from 1948 to 1950. He was then Secretary General of the National Economic Council between 1950 and 1957, before he was Ambassador to the Malaysian Federation from 1957 to 1959 .

After his return to Bangkok in February 1959, Sunthorn Hongladarom was appointed Minister of Economy by Prime Minister Field Marshal Sarit Dhanarajata and shortly afterwards Minister of Finance in his government on May 1, 1957 , and held this office in the subsequent government of Prime Minister Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn until July 8, 1965.

In addition, he held several other offices at the same time and was, among other things, a representative on the Board of Directors of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and in 1959 at the International Finance Corporation (IFC). He also represented the interests of Thailand in 1960 on the board of directors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and was chairman of the IBRD, IFC and IMF in 1961. In 1963 he also became Deputy Development Minister.

After a government reshuffle, he was again Minister of Economic Affairs on July 8, 1965 and held this post until his resignation and his replacement by Pote Sarasin on February 10, 1968.

In 1969 he was appointed ambassador to the United States . He held this post until September 5, 1972. Successor as ambassador was the previous ambassador to Canada Anand Panyarachun .

Most recently, between September 5, 1972 and June 30, 1977, he was the fifth and last General Secretary of SEATO .
