Jevgeni Ossinovski

Jevgeni Olegovich Ossinovski (born March 15, 1986 in Kohtla-Järve , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician . Between 2014 and 2018 he was a minister in three governments and between 2015 and 2015 he was chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Estonia (SDE).

Life

Youth & Education

In 2004 he finished secondary school in Tallinn ( Tallinna Reaalkool ). From 2004 to 2006 he ran his own company. Until 2007, Ossinovski studied philosophy at the University of Tartu . In 2009 he received a Masters Degree in Philosophy from the University of Warwick and in 2010 in Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science .

Political activity

In the 2011 general election he was elected as a member of the Riigikogu . In March 2014, Ossinovski became the new Minister of Education and Research in the social-liberal coalition government under Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas .

After the 2015 election , he held the executive office until April 9, 2015 and returned as a member of parliament when the new government was sworn in. On May 30th of the same year, Ossinovski was elected party chairman of the SDE, succeeding Sven Mikser . On September 14, 2015, as part of a cabinet reshuffle, he was appointed Minister of Labor and Health in the Rõivas II cabinet . After the coalition collapsed in November 2016, he kept his ministerial post in the cabinet of the new government under Jüri Ratas . In April 2018, Ossinovski announced that he would concentrate entirely on his office as party chairman in preparation for the 2019 parliamentary elections . On May 2nd, Riina Sikkut was sworn in as his successor in the ministerial office. Ossinovski returned as a member of parliament and took over the chairmanship of the SDE parliamentary group.

In the 2019 elections he was again able to win a seat in the Riigikogu . Since his party had to accept losses and no longer part of the government, Ossinovski initially took over the chairmanship again, but announced that he would no longer be available for the next election of the party chairman. Indrek Saar was elected as his successor on June 9, 2019 , who subsequently also took over the chairmanship of the parliamentary group.

Private

Ossinovski is the son of the Kazakh- born entrepreneur Oleg Ossinovski (* 1966). He belongs to the Russian-speaking minority in Estonia.

Jevgeni Ossinovski is married and has one son.
