Yevgeny Mikhailovich Timakin

Yevgeny Michailowitsch Timakin ( Russian Евгений Михайлович Тимакин , born  January 23, 1916 in Rostov-on-Don , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ; †  2004 ) was a Russian pianist , piano teacher and holder of the honorary title of Honored Teacher of the School of the RSFSR .

Timakin grew up as a half-orphan in Rostov-on-Don. He received piano lessons at home at a young age and attended a music school from the age of eight. He later studied piano at the Rostov-on-Don University of Music in the class of Vasily Wassiljewitsch Schaub and then from 1935 at the Moscow Conservatory with Konstantin Igumnow . In 1940 he graduated with honors - despite a hand injury that he sustained at a young age due to excessive strain and that had accompanied him all his life - and was drafted into the army . During World War II he served in the Moscow air defense troops, most recently as a lieutenant. After the war Timakin began teaching, first at the Music Pedagogical School and from 1952 to 1999 at the Central Music School in Moscow . He also led seminars for teachers in the Soviet Union and Eastern European countries and was Dean of the Piano Faculty of the Music Academy in Novi Sad , Yugoslavia , from 1975 to 1979 . Timakin's students include a. the winners of international piano competitions Valeri Kamischow, Michail Pletnjow , Ivo Pogorelich , Vladimir Feltsman , Jekaterina Novizkaja , Aleksander Strukow, Olga Kern and Alexander Mogilewski .

Timakin's textbooks Training as a Pianist and Training in Coordination , published in 1984 and 1989 and reissued in 2009 and 2012, are among the standard works of Russian piano lessons. The textbooks were also published in English and supplemented by video material in the 1990s on the initiative of Mikhail Pletnjow. A portrait of Timakin has been in his memory since 2016 together with the nine other "outstanding [...] musicians and teachers" in the great concert hall of the Moscow Central Music School. In 2010 the commemorative history of the Moscow Central Music School was published. A collection of articles, essays and interviews in Russian with memories and appreciation of Timakin's teaching and pedagogy.

In February 2019, the international Timakin piano competition took place at the Swiridow Children's Music School in Moscow for the first time.
