Jiří Kotrba (born February 28, 1958 in Písek ) is a former Czech football player and current coach or functionary.

Player career

Kotrba played for ZVVZ Milevsko in his youth, at the age of 18 he moved to FC Bohemians Prague . In the 1977/78 season, the defender made his debut in the 1st Czechoslovak League. In October 1981 he went to Tábor for a year to do his military service there. He did not return to Prague , however, but moved to Dynamo České Budějovice , where he ended his career in 1988.

In his career, the defender completed a total of 85 games in the 1st Czechoslovakian league, in which he scored two goals.

Coaching career

As early as 1983, Kotrba was still an active player in various youth teams of his club Dynamo České Budějovice. In 1989 he took over as head coach of the professional team and rose to the first division with her in 1991. After only one point from the first five games of the season, the club separated from him.

In the fall of 1991, Kotrba was coach of relegation-threatened SKP Union Cheb , but failed to stay up. He stayed in Cheb anyway and immediately rose again with the team.

For the 1993/94 season Kotrba moved to FK Jablonec in the 2nd division but in mid-September he accepted the offer from Viktoria Žižkov .

With Viktoria Žižkov Kotrba won the Czech Cup and finished eighth in the league. In the 1994/95 season he led the team to second place during the winter break, but four defeats at the beginning of the second half of the season led to his dismissal.

Kotrba returned to Jablonec in the summer of 1995 and was responsible for ensuring that the next few years were among the most successful times in the club's history. The team finished third in the Gambrinus League in 1995/96 and 1996/97 and won the Czech Cup in 1997/98. After a poor start to the 1998/99 season, the split came.

Kotrba only had to wait two months for his next job and took over Dukla Příbram in November 1998 . In Příbram Kotrba stayed for almost five years and reached fourth place in 2001, the best placement in the history of the club. In the summer of 2001 he got an offer from Sparta Prague , but turned it down. After the second day of the 2002/03 season, he resigned for personal reasons.

In early November 2002, Kotrba took over the coaching position at Sigma Olomouc , where he only stayed until the winter break, when he received an offer from Sparta Prague, which he accepted this time.

Kotrba led the league leaders Sparta Prague to the championship 2002/03. In the following season he reached the last 16 of the Champions League with the team , in which Sparta failed 0-0 and 1: 4 at AC Milan . When at the end of March 2004 it became foreseeable that Sparta would not be able to defend their title, Kotrba was replaced by František Straka .

In the winter break of 2004/05 Kotrba was coach at 1. FC Brno , but could not improve the team's results significantly. After nine games without a win at the beginning of the 2005/06 season, Kotrba was released. He then worked as the head of the youth academy at his former club Dynamo České Budějovice.

In early 2007, Kotrba was called as a kind of savior to his relegation-threatened ex-club Marila Příbram, but even he could no longer prevent the team's relegation. In the summer of 2007 he became the sports director at Dynamo České Budějovice.

In the summer of 2008, Kotrba also took over the coaching position for the Czech U21 national team.
