Jiří Petr (born May 13, 1931 in Hradec Králové ; † November 12, 2014 in Prague ) was a Czech agricultural scientist. He was Professor of Crop Production and Rector Emeritus of the Czech Agricultural University in Prague .

Life

Petr received a high school diploma in Broumov and began his studies at the Technical University in Prague in the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry in the field of plant production . After graduating as Dipl.Ing Agr. he was a postgraduate student in the field of special crop production with study visits to Moscow , at Rothamsted Research and in Halle (Saale) . As a candidate in agricultural sciences (CSc) with internships in Norway, Sweden, England, Germany, France, Austria and Spain, he was awarded a doctorate in agr. with the dissertation on the biology of Bohemian alternative wheat varieties . His habilitation dealt with studies on the photoperiodic reaction of grain and legumes . After his publication Yield Formation in Grain , he took on teaching duties for crop production as a lecturer or associate professor. Petr became a full professor for crop production in 1989; In 1990 he was elected Rector of the Czech Agricultural University in Prague (CZU).

From 1990 to 1994 he was rector of the CZU; Immediately after taking office, he agreed to cooperate with EU universities, introduced Western European languages ​​and gave lectures to business experts from Western Europe. Thereby he created the basic requirements for the high international reputation of the University in Prague- Suchdol, which his successor Jan Hron further expanded.

From 1990 to 2010 he was editor and editor of the science magazine; Scientia Agriculturae Bohemia . He received numerous scientific awards a. a. from the Mendel University in Brno , the Agrarian University in Nitra , the University in Budweis and the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences ; In 1999 he received his honorary doctorate as Dr. hc from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala .
