Link - The Butler is a British horror thriller from 1986 directed by Richard Franklin.
action
Great Britain: The young American student Jane Chase accepts the offer of her professor Dr. Steven Philips to assist him in his monkey experiments in his remote home in Scotland. The professor keeps several monkeys and lets them run around in the area so that they can look for prey for themselves. He is dominant towards the monkeys and they obey every word. When the highly intelligent orangutan "Link" is about to be put to sleep, he goes nuts . The professor then disappeared. Jane recalls the professor telling her that the monkeys should never be the dominant species and that she should never back down to them. Link is becoming more and more self-confident and less and less listening to commands. When Jane realizes that the monkey wants to kill her, she flees and Link hunts her. The other monkeys are also dominated by him. Meanwhile, three friends of Jane arrive to visit and find traces of battle, destruction and the killed professor. Two of them are killed by Link before Jane uses a trick to trick him into starting a fire in the house, to which he himself falls victim.
In the end, Jane and her surviving friend flee and take a young monkey with them, which they consider harmless, but which turns out to be a mistake in the last shot - several dead sheep are lying in a meadow at the edge of the road.
criticism
“Thriller variant with moderately reproduced borrowings from Hitchcock films. The idea of constructing a monkey as an unpredictable link between animal wildness and civilized humanity is developed with numerous inconsistencies and without staging density. The only bright spot in this sometimes very bloody film is the excellent dressage performance of Hollywood specialist Ray Berwick. "
Rotten Tomatoes only scored 29% positive reviews (based on 7 reviews). Director Franklin himself later called his film "an unsatisfactory experience on almost every level".
Awards
Richard Franklin received a special award from the Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival in 1986 . Elisabeth Shue as the leading actress and Jerry Goldsmith as the composer of the film music were nominated for the Saturn Award in 1987 .
backgrounds
In 1979 Richard Franklin got the offer to direct the film. He called the concept a kind of great white shark with chimpanzees . After reading a report on aggressive chimpanzees, the script was written by David Zlotoff , Tom Ackerman and Everett De Roche . Franklin himself moved the plot to England.
"The English setting to me was essential. I wanted to contrast the primitivism of jungle animals with Old World values, high culture, and "'civilization' - which is one of the subjects of the picture"
“The English (sic!) Location was very important to me. I wanted to contrast the primitivism of jungle animals with the values of the old world, high culture and 'civilization' - that is one of the themes of the film. "
The film was in St Abbs ( Scotland ) near Coldingham rotated. It grossed around $ 1.7 million in US cinemas . Link, an orangutan, is referred to as a chimpanzee throughout the film. His fur appears to have been dyed black for the film.
