Jiří Pospíšil (born November 24, 1975 in Chomutov ) is a Czech politician and former chairman of the TOP 09 party . Before that he was a member of the Democratic Citizens' Party ODS for many years .

Life

After successfully attending the grammar school in Plzeň , Pospíšil studied law at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen . He completed this course in 1999 as a master’s degree, in 2002, after completing his doctorate, he obtained a doctorate in JUDr.

First, in 1994 Pospíšil became a member of the Democratic Citizens' Alliance ODA , in 1998 he joined the ODS and was a co-founder of the “Young Conservatives” (Mladí konzervativci) in West Bohemia. In the parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic in 2002 he was elected to the House of Representatives for the ODS . Since 2007 he has been a member of the editorial board of the magazine Státní zastupitelství .

In the two governments of Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek ( I and II ) Pospíšil was Minister of Justice of the Czech Republic (2006–2009), and from 2006 to 2007 he was also chairman of the legislative council of the Czech government.

On September 29, 2009, Rector Josef Průša appointed him temporary dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, after the previous management of the faculty had to resign after a scandal over obscure titles and a plagiarism affair. In November 2009 he was officially elected the incumbent dean, but gave up this position after re-entering the government.

In the bourgeois-conservative government of Petr Nečas , Pospíšil was again Minister of Justice and Chairman of the Legislative Council since July 13, 2010. On June 27, 2012, he was dismissed from the government by President Václav Klaus at the request of Prime Minister Nečas . Nečas justified the dismissal with a lack of management skills because Pospísil was demanding too much financial resources.

Jiří Pospíšil was the top candidate of the ODS in the elections to the regional parliament of the Pilsen region in October 2012, with the ODS doing extremely well in this district with 26.48% contrary to the national trend and becoming the strongest political force. However, since ČSSD and KSČM still had a majority in the regional parliament, Pospíšil did not succeed in replacing the incumbent Hejtman of the region, Milan Chovanec ( ČSSD ). With the best result of all the deputies, Pospíšil was confirmed on November 4, 2012 in the office of Vice Chairman of the ODS. On December 19, 2012, Pospíšil was also elected Vice President of the Czech House of Representatives.

In the 2013 parliamentary elections , the ODS clearly lost its approval, and Pospíšil was able to defend his parliamentary mandate. After the elections, however, he was not reappointed Vice President of Parliament and was also defeated in his candidacy for the continuation of the vice chairmanship of his party.

In January 2014 he resigned from the ODS. In the 2014 European elections , Pospíšil won a mandate in the European Parliament as a non-party candidate on the joint list of the TOP 09 and STAN parties . In addition, he also defended his seat in the regional parliament of the Pilsen region as a candidate for the TOP 09 in the regional elections in 2016 .

In October 2017 he became a member of the TOP 09 party. After the incumbent party chairman Miroslav Kalousek announced his withdrawal from the party chairmanship due to the poor election result of TOP 09 in the 2017 House of Representatives elections , Pospíšil was elected as the new chairman of the party on November 26, 2017. After two years, he did not run again for chairmanship of the party. The previous first deputy chairwoman, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, was elected as his successor on November 24, 2019 .
