Milan Chovanec (born January 31, 1970 in Pilsen ) is a Czech politician of the social democratic party ČSSD and was Interior Minister in the Bohuslav Sobotka government from January 2014 to December 2017 .

Political activity

Chovanec studied at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen . He has been a member of the ČSSD since 1997. From 2002 to 2010 he was a member of the Pilsen City Council. After previously holding the post of deputy, Chovanec was governor ( krajský hejtman ) of the Pilsen region from September 2010 to January 2014 . In October 2013 he was sworn in as a member of the House of Representatives . From 2013 Chovanec was also deputy party chairman. Since Bohuslav Sobotka's resignation on June 14, 2017, he has been acting party chairman. In the new election to chair the party on February 18, 2018, he applied for the chairmanship, but was defeated by the former parliamentary president Jan Hamáček . As a result of the formation of a government after the 2017 House of Representatives elections , he also left the cabinet and continues to be a member of parliament as a simple member.
