Jiang Shusheng

Jiang Shusheng ( Chinese  蒋树 声 ; born April 1940 in Wuxi , Jiangsu ) is a Chinese physicist , university professor and politician of the Chinese Democratic League , who, among other things, was president of Nanjing University from 1997 to 2006 , and chairman of the Chinese Democratic League from 2005 to 2012 2008 to 2013 Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress .

Life

Jiang Shusheng, who belongs to the Han ethnic group , began studying physics at Nanjing University after completing school and was a lecturer at the Faculty of Physics at Nanjing University between July 1963 and 1988, before becoming vice dean of the university from 1988 to 1991 State Key Laboratory for Solid Microstructures. Since 1985, in these roles, he had carried out a number of important scientific research projects for the National Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China . In 1991 he took over a professorship at the Faculty of Physics and was dean of this faculty between 1993 and 1996. After he was Vice President of Nanjing University between 1996 and 1997, he replaced Chen Yu as President of Nanjing University in April 1997 and held this position until he was replaced by Chen Jun in June 2006. At the same time, he was also in personal union between 1997 and 2006 Chairman of the Academic Evaluation Commission and Director of the Academic Affairs Committee of Nanjing University. During his teaching and research activities, he also undertook research and study visits to Great Britain , Australia and Italy and received a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University in 2002 and from the University of Bristol in 2003 .

In 1998, Jiang Shusheng first became a member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and remained in that position until 2008. He was also a member of the State Committee for Academic Degrees for a while. As the successor to Ding Shisun , he took over the position of chairman of the Chinese Democratic League in December 2005 and thus chairman of one of eight bloc parties outside the Chinese Communist Party . He held this position until 2012, when he was succeeded by Zhang Baowen . In addition, from 2008 to 2013 he was Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress
