The Jiangyin Bridge ( Chinese  江陰 長江 大橋 ) is a suspension bridge over the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province in the People's Republic of China . Opened in 1997, the bridge is the first Chinese suspension bridge with a span of over one kilometer and was the first bridge down the valley from Nanjing . The bridge is one of the ten longest suspension bridges in the world .

technical description

The structure with a span of 1385 m leads six lanes of the Jinghu highway Beijing - Shanghai over the river. A construction was deliberately chosen which does not require any pillars in the middle of the river bed. This prevented the flow conditions in the river from changing, which could have led to deposits or scour formation . In addition, it does not hinder shipping. Under the stiffening girder, the bridge has a clearance height of 50 m, so that ships up to 50,000 DWT can pass the bridge.

The 186.8 m high concrete pylons are very close to the river bank, so that only the section between the two pylons was designed as a suspension bridge. Reinforced concrete beam bridges serve as approach bridges and extend to the pylons. This construction method made it easier to hold the stiffening girder of the suspension bridge, which made it easier to anchor the suspension cables . The sandy bottom on the north side made a very large anchor block necessary with the dimensions 51 × 69 m and a depth of 58 m.

The suspension cables are made from prefabricated parallel wire ropes (PPWS). Each suspension cable consists of 169 ropes, each of which consists of 127 wires with a diameter of 5.35 mm. The roadway girder is designed as an aerodynamically optimized steel box girder, which is only 3 m high with a width of 36.9 m.
