From 2009 to 2014 she was chairman of the European party of regionalist parties, the European Free Alliance .

Life

education

Jill Evans was born on May 8, 1959 in Ystrad Rhondda , County Glamorgan , one of the traditional mining districts in Wales. She attended Tonypandy Grammar School, then the Polytechnic of Wales, Trefforest (now the University of South Wales ). After studying at the University of Aberystwyth , Evans went back to the Polytechnic School to work as a research assistant. She then worked for six years at the National Federation of Women's Institutes in Wales.

Political engagement in Wales

Even before Jill Evans was elected to political office, she was politically active locally in Wales. Among other things, she campaigned against the stationing of American missiles on the Royal Air Force's Greenham Common airfield .

Evans ran for the first time in the constituency of Torfaen for the Welsh party Plaid Cymru in the elections to the British House of Commons in 1987 , but missed the entrance significantly (1.2 percent of the vote). In 1992 she was elected to the Rhondda Borough Council and in 1993 to the Mid Glamorgan County Council. After the two were merged, she was elected to the Rhondda Cynon Taf Council in 1995, where she was active until 1999.

During her time as a council member, she was already committed to the interests of her party across the region. In 1993 the Plaid Cymru chose it for the European Committee of the Regions , which met for the first time in 1994 . She was also a representative of the European Free Alliance , of which Play Cymru is a member. From 1994 to 1996 she held the chair of Plaid Cymru, from 2004 to 2010 she was vice-chair of the party, and from 2010 to 2013 she was president of Plaid Cymru.

Change to the European Parliament

In 1999 her party nominated Evans for first place on the list for the 1999 European elections in the Wales European constituency. In the previous four elections to the European Parliament (1979, 1984, 1989, 1994), the party had not managed to win a mandate for the European Parliament. In the 1999 European elections, the party surprisingly won 29.1 percent of the votes in the constituency and thus two seats: In addition to Jill Evans, Eurig Wyn was also elected. Evans and Wyn joined the group made up of Greens and regionalists, The Greens / EFA , which was regrouped in 1999 . For the group Evans was in the 5th legislative period (1999-2004) a member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and the Committee on Women's Rights and Equal Opportunities , of which she was elected vice-chair. She was also an alternate member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Consumer Policy .

In the European elections in 2004 Evans defended the mandate for Plaid Cymru with 17.4 percent despite a strong loss of votes. Due to the accession of ten new EU countries, the number of seats for the European constituency of Wales was reduced from 5 to 4, so that Plaid Cymru would only have won one mandate even if the results were better. In the 6th parliamentary term, Evans was a member for her group on the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. She was also an alternate member of the Committee on Regional Development and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality.

After the European elections in 2009 , in which Evans won 18.5 percent and was also the only Plaid Cymru member in parliament, her group The Greens / EFA elected her as first deputy chairman. In addition, MEPs from the European Free Alliance elected Evans to chair the group for the legislature. During the 7th legislative term (2009-2014) Evans served on the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. She was also a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality.

In the 2014 European elections , Evans again won a seat for Plaid Cymru with 15.26 percent. In the 8th legislative period (2014-2019) Evans changed her focus of work in Parliament and for her group member in the Committee on Culture and Education , as well as deputy member in the Committee on Transport and Tourism .

In the 2019 European elections , Evans defended her mandate with 19.6 percent, although she had originally planned not to run. In the 9th legislative period (2019-2024) she was a member of the Committee on Regional Development and a deputy member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism for her parliamentary group . As part of the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union , Evans left the European Parliament on January 31, 2020.
