Wales (constituency)

Location of Wales within the United Kingdom

Wales ( Welsh Cymru ) was one of the twelve constituencies in the United Kingdom for the European elections . It existed from 1999 to 2020 and covered the entire area of Wales .

history

Between 1979 and 1994 there were initially four and later five separate constituencies for Wales, each of which had one member sent to the EU Parliament according to the majority voting system . In the course of the European Parliamentary Elections Act 1999 , these were replaced by a single constituency with initially five, since 2004 four MPs to be elected. The mandate was awarded based on the principle of proportional representation using the D'Hondt procedure .

In the wake of the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union constituency was dissolved 31 January 2020th
